1. Finding the perfect lipstick to pair with your bright eye shadow can be tricky. Tried and true nude shades are always a safe option, but if you want to experiment with brighter hues, opt for a sheer pink like January Jones’s. At the Paley Center Benefit in Los Angeles, the actress paired her icy blue shadow with a barely-there pink lip. While the thought of wearing a rosy lipstick with blue eye shadow may channel memories of the ‘80s, Jones kept her look balanced by sticking to light, airy finishes. To make sure you aren’t too heavy-handed with the lipstick, look for a shade similar to your own natural lip color, but with a slight pink tint. Use your finger to dab on the color until you reach your desired intensity, then finish with a touch of clear gloss to lock in the hue. The result? A pop of color that stands out, yet doesn't dominate the look. Perfect!
2. With Halloween just around the corner, rocking a dark, vampy nail is more appropriate than ever. We love the inky sable shade Alessandra Ambrosio wore, and how she changed up the traditional French mani by adding glitter to the tip. The extra shimmer is a grown-up take on the blinged-out polishes of years past, and since glitter is harder to remove, Ambrosio’s manicure has extra staying power. Deeper shades tend to stain the nail bed, so be sure to apply a generous amount of base coat to shield each of your digits. When you’re ready for a polish change, remember to use a rich hand cream before you swipe on the nail polish remover. It prevents the dark hue from bleeding onto your cuticles, and keeps the nail polish remover from drying out your hands.
3. For her hair, I wanted a glamorous ‘50s wave with a daytime feel,” Emmy Rossum’s hairstylist, Brian Magallones said about her look. We loved the style at New York Comic Con so much, we asked him to take us through the process. Starting with clean, damp hair, he began by blow drying Rossum’s hair straight with a large round brush. To give the hair shine and keep frizz at bay, he used a combination of gel and serum drops onto hair shafts. With a 1” iron, he curled her hair and veiled with a flexible hairspray. Then, with a paddle brush, he relaxed the curls into soft waves and finished the look with a light mist of shine spray.
